Seeing the Past watching the Future.
Did you watch the soccer match between Argentina and Germany? If your answer is "Yes" you may have watched more than just a soccer game.
You may have witnessed a match between yesterdays way of thinking and tomorrows way of thinking. And not just in terms of soccer but in a much wider perspective.
Both directions of thought were present at the game: The future was out there on the field to admire. The past was seen watching the future from the stands. And from the other side.
The past was German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who enjoyed the game while trying to convey am image of a real soccer fan (in the hope of securing some future votes from the German fan base). Even though her style of leadership (of lack thereof) and her whole client oriented administration is in absolutely no way representative of this productive, forward looking atmosphere.
Then there was that superstar phenomena that may have affected more than just one team in this World Cup: Teams that did not really function like a team at all because they were just groups that were build around one or two superstars. And a lot of very athletic but not so important assistants.
Hierarchical top-down constructs cease to function once the top is neutralized. On the other side we saw a real team concept: Young players taking responsibility for themselves because the leadership is indisposed, who literally do everything they can to support one another: like a defensive player suddenly playing offensive or vice versa. The star of the show is the team.
Superstars (in the world of soccer and many other areas for that matter) are not really necessary. With the occasional exception, team play will always excel. The responsibility is shared, the benefits are too and so is the glory.
Try that on for motivation — as opposed to serving a "Messi", "Rooney", "Merkel" or "Ackermann & Co." Merkel should enjoy her tax paid (austerity?) excursion to South Africa. Hopefully it is a farewell trip to her style of politics.
