The Joke’s on You!

The Joke is in You.jpg

Abbeyville is in the middle of nowhere. At least that is how it seems when I drive past the huge regional high school on my way down to the Gulf of Mexico.

I was surprised to hear the community mentioned on the news. It seems that rural America is running out of money. To cope, Abbeyville is closing their Middle School. Sadly the TV commentator said all the middle school students would go to the elementary school, making that school a K-6 school. Perhaps the Commentator should go back there too.

I read the other day about the discretionary cuts that the GOP would like to make. It seem that they want to cut everything but the military. And, I mean everything, including and especially Medicare and Social Security.

"Death Squads?" We don’t need no stinking death squads. We will just remove all means of financial support and healthcare. See how long those old farts will last without that.

I just heard again how the economic recovery is providing lots of new jobs. What a joke. Like the weather person so busy looking at her maps that she can’t look outside.

About those foreclosures, there is something I don’t understand. The banks made all those loans and then turned around and sold that paper. Those notes were chopped up and repackaged AND then resold. Now, the government jumped in and paid off the people holding all that "bad paper" at face value.

So, everyone was paid off. So who is kicking people out of their homes and why, if we paid off all that paper?

If we are closing our schools because we don’t have enough money to keep them open, how are we going to be able to educate our young people? We are having a hard enough time trying to do that with the schools open. I heard a couple college students talking about school at Starbucks the other day.

I asked if either one could name a seated Supreme Court judge. After thinking for a moment or two, "Sandra Day O’Connor!" he said, apparently proud that he got her whole name correct. He looked so sad when I said she had retired. He could not come up with another despite the fact that it had only been a month or so since Sotomayor had been confirmed. How are we ever going to get out of this mess?

Palin is going to run for office. She could win. I am guessing things could be a lot worse than they are today.

So what is all this feeding frenzy over Toyota? They have some recalls. That is to be expected, they are making them here now. I heard a Floridian proudly say the other day that he "buys American."

American? You mean that Chevrolet that is now made in Mexico? He didn’t know that he was talking to a former Flint resident who watched as GM shipped all the jobs (Chevrolet, Buick, AC Spark Plug) in Flint, MI off to Mexico.

I am not sure, but if I had to guess, there are probably more Toyotas made here than Chevrolets. Four of the top ten cars made in America are Toyotas, including the Camry which is currently the most "made in USA car." General Motors and Ford, together, make five of them and Honda has one. It looks like Toyota is more American than all the "Big three" together.

Iran is making serious inroads into Iraq’s body politic. I am curious what we are going to do when the Shiites in Iraq join with the Shiites in Iran. If it happens legally, at the voting booth, what a joke that would be.

Did Washington think it would go any other way? What was Bush thinking? Oh yeah, I forgot. He didn’t do that very well.

All I do know is that we are spending billions of dollars bailing out banks and bombing terrorists in Afghanistan/Pakistan and our schools are failing and closing, healthcare is kicking our collective asses and idiots are about to take this country hostage.

It’s all a big joke but it’s on us!
