Do you sometimes get the impression that the system is somewhat out of whack?
The old adage, “a fool and his money are soon parted,” sprang to mind this morning, followed quickly by another. “Too much money is like too much sex.” One can’t ever have enough, or can you? Clearly someone can if they think it is OK to spend $15,000 for an item that didn’t cost more than $15 originally, or more that $5 to produce in the first place.
That this item is available for this price, much less that it makes it to mainstream media is indicative that there are a lot of fools around with way too much money. That there are people with $15,000 to blow on a plastic chair while there are thousands of people trying to decide between buying enough to eat or buying the diabetic or cardiovascular medications that will keep them alive long enough to eat, is a clear indication that something is way out of whack in this country.
In a democracy, taxes are one of the means by which wealth is redistributed. Clearly our tax structure is broken if permits this degree of dichotomy in our economy. Taxes must be raised. They must be raised on the people who do not think twice about buying a $15,000 chair or a $500 showerhead. I have my doubts, however, that it will ever happen. Somehow, the Republicans have convinced a lot of middleclass voters that they should also be republicans or blue dog democrats. These Republicans have convinced a lot of poor people that the Republican party has their best interests at heart. When those Republicans say, “No new taxes,” these poor, foolish people think they mean no new taxes on them. What a joke.
Until wealth is redistributed in this country, we will continue to spiral ever downward. Without the opportunities that the needed redistribution would offer, there can be no hope. Without hope there is no impetus for change. The rich get richer and the poor are separated even further from their money. Will there be anyone left who can remember how it ought to have been? Good question.
